Your Kitchen Designer
When you are having a new kitchen designed or remodelled it is really important that you discuss your needs, wants, and desires with your designer.
Designers come in all types, some good, some bad and some indifferent.
How do you choose the best one for you?
There are many, many things that should be taken into consideration when choosing your designer, below are a few hints and guidelines.
Preliminary things to look for.
Do I like the kitchens they have designed?
It’s no good getting a designer who is great at classic style but not good at contemporary or more modern work. Make sure you see lots of their work first. Don’t settle for just generic images of a kitchen, ask for real examples they have done.
Do I like the materials they use?
If you want a kitchen that is made with sustainable timber or eco-friendly practices, or a designer who does not use toxin laden products you need to find out before you engage them.
Do they have experience?
You don’t want to “pay for someone’s learning curve”. Make sure they have experience and the company they work for is sound and reputable. The last thing you need is to pay a deposit only to have the company disappear.
Do I feel comfortable with this person?
Feeling comfortable with your designer is important. If you are going to be working with them for a while you don’t want to feel that there is not an easy flow of dialogue.
Do I feel I am being listened to?
Before you go too far down the design track make sure you can get your dreams and ideas across to the designer easily. Do they embrace them or are they constantly trying to steer you in another direction? Look for signs they have another agenda and if it doesn’t fit yours find someone else.
Most importantly
Your designer needs to listen to you, but you also need to listen to them. They are professionals at what they do. They should know what is going to work and what isn’t, also what may be a legal requirement.
